Self-Sovereignty 101

Self-Sovereignty 101

Whether you find yourself balking at this assertion or feeling the "shiver of truth" moving across your skin, there is no denying that every single one of us is The Queen of our Life, or should be.

Being the Queen doesn't mean we get to boss everyone around or have riches dropped at our feet. It means that we recognize ourselves as the Sovereign Ruler of our inner and outer landscape--what we see within and without and how we experience life.

The Queen represents power and authority in all women. Symbolically, her court can be anything from a corporation, to her home, to her body.

The archetypal energy of Queen must be activated through our own maturity and growth and that guides us to claiming our full expression and sovereignty.

If you have been around the block a time or two in your development as a woman, you may have heard of the three stages of a woman's life: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. These come from an ancient understanding of the Goddess and in part are also related to the phases of the moon (an ancient symbol of the Goddess). But this understanding is incomplete. The moon has FOUR phases not three: waxing, waning, full, and new (or DARK). This fourth phase, which is hidden, has been missing from the sacred teachings about the phases of a woman's life.

Between Mother and Crone is the missing chapter of QUEEN. And you simply cannot get to full Crone without first embracing and embodying your self-sovereignty.

The subtle patriarchal message of the missing Queen is, "Raise the kids (Mother) or settle into your rocker (Crone) and leave the world to us men." Well, we can all see how that is turning out.  Don't get me wrong, I love men. But the voices and hearts of women are desperately needed in leadership arenas everywhere we look. It's time for us to prepare ourselves to take a more active role, but we must learn to lead ourselves first. I believe it is absolutely ESSENTIAL that women wake up to and embrace their sovereignty so that we can make the difference we are called to make.

The world will be saved by the Western woman.

~HH The Dalai Lama

Perhaps like me, you know that feeling of being adrift between Mother and Crone. As I entered into my 50th year of life, my role as mother was changing (my teen daughter no longer needs me in the same way), and I was clearly not ready for Crone! Nope. Not. At. All. But as hard as I tried to find my footing, it eluded me. The moments of passion and pleasure in my marriage were far too few. My work life was fraught with stress and frustration. And my body was...well, not the same.

It wasn't until I focused on self-sovereignty using the missing archetype of The Queen that it all began to make sense to me.

"The Queen, though not yet old, is quite aware that the passing of time is no longer in Her favor.
She is not concerned with the business of winding down Her life,
but rather with living it to the max before it is too late.
The Queen refuses to go softly into the dark of night.
She bursts into glorious flame like a dramatic sunset in the western sky...
She is ignited with a fiery patina, glowing from within.
She is the fire we have been missing."
- Donna Henes

Center Stage can be a scary place, but there was no denying that's where I knew I was supposed to be. It was time to choose me.

I invested significant time and money to study with masters of energy and Tantric practices, and began the deep healing work of coming home to my body, mind, heart, and soul. I discovered the Shakti Life Force Energy that is my birthright.  I learned how to let it flow in and through me and miraculous things began to happen.

But it wasn't all a bed of roses. As I claimed my right to focus on my self-sovereignty, I had to navigate through tremendous internal resistance. The critical voices inside my head tried to sabotage my efforts out of fear of being seen as selfish or weird. They used guilt and shame. They insisted I should stay small and play it safe. But my Soul had other plans for me.

Since stepping fully into my sovereignty I have experienced a kind of life I didn't know was even possible. I feel alive and in love with myself and my life like never before. My relationship with my husband is both full of fiery passion and tender love. My daughter and I are closer than ever as I now know how to give her the space she needs to become a woman. Even my work with women has become more potent and my business has become more fruitful.

Everything is different now because I remember who I am:

The gift of The Queen archetype is experienced in varied ways but it is always dependent on the ability to receive.

But there are three hidden problems that stand in the way of breaking free from the Not-Enough Club and making the change to a more feminine, satisfying way of being:

We live in a world energetically more suited to men so most women have been trained to operate energetically like men. And you have probably gotten pretty far in your career by mimicking masculine power patterns. But your energy system is unsuited to this, and you simply cannot be a more powerful man than the men. You can, however, be a more powerful woman!

If you are a high achieving woman, you may be unknowingly closed energetically to receiving help, which is why you may sometime refuse, shrug off, or criticize the help you get. The truth is that most women don’t get the support they desperately want because they simply do not know how to be completely open to and fully receive the help that is available.

This is not your fault. As a woman you have a heart made for doing. Yet it's problematic if you don't also tend to yourself or accurately measure how much you really have to give. This leads to over-giving, and before you know it, resentment, criticism, contempt, and defensiveness threaten to poison your thoughts and wreak havoc on your love.

The Queen knows two things, and they are inextricably linked.

She knows her POWER – her  authority and right to power

She knows how to RECEIVE – which is where she gets her power.

This is a problem for most women because we really suck at receiving. Why? Because we've been told we need to give, give, give! And, in truth, during The Mother phase of life, giving is an essential part of carrying out that role.

But once we arrive at midlife, the time has come for us to take center stage in our own lives.

Perhaps you are finding yourself filled with fire (and a few hot flashes too!) for the passions you put on the back burner as a Mother and are ready to bring them forth now that your kids are getting older.

Are you ready to receive your due?

Or maybe you are still feeling exhausted, drained, and disconnected from your dreams, unable to find your joy.
