CRAFTING AFFECTION INTO MEANINGFUL MEMENTOS
Saturday, Oct. 19 to Sunday, Oct. 20
9:30 am - 5:30 pm
“Everything is either coming into existence or going out of existence.”
Do you have a new love to celebrate?
Or the loss of a love to grieve?
Beloved family members, pets, and even past versions of ourselves all come and go…
Mementos and tokens of love are a powerful way we can express and honor a new love or a past love.
They help us keep a loved one close…even if they have passed on.
Love and loss are two sides of the same coin.
Come and join us for a 2-day exploration of how we honor and remember LOVE.

Eternal Love and Loss: Hairwork and Eye Miniatures in the Nelson-Atkins Collection
Explore timeless expressions of love and loss through this focus exhibition featuring captivating and mysterious eye miniatures, and portrait miniatures adorned with intricate hairwork. Serving as enduring tokens of allegiance, and affection, these miniatures transcend time, connecting the sitter with the owner or wearer in a tangible link of connection and love.
Gaining Inspiration from The Nelson-Atkins Museum
The exhibition also explores the fascinating allure of eye miniatures, sparked by King George IV’s gift to his secret companion, Maria Fitzherbert. Mounted in rings, brooches, and bracelets, these “lover’s eyes” depict intimate connections while also leaving an air of mystery or anonymity of whose eye may be depicted. Revived briefly by Queen Victoria in the late 1800s, the enduring trend of lover’s eyes miniatures, remains popular today.
Hairwork, a meticulous process involving locks of hair arranged on a palette of china or glass, created braids or knots immortalizing the essence of the sitter. Adorned with gemstones and gold, these pieces conveyed profound messages with recurring motifs like the Prince of Wales feather, which affirmed allegiance to the British monarchy.
Art has a magical way of connecting humans and the experience of the human journey across space and time. As we see the tale of love these pieces tell, we will open our own creative process to allow love and grief to mingle in the bitter-sweet way that acknowledges the tenderness, joy, and pain that we may feel in times of love and loss.
We will use these elegant and creative mementos of love as inspiration for our own crafting project during the course of the weekend, as we create sacred space for remembrance of love and release of grief.

What Others Say
The workshop I attended this past weekend was so fulfilling for so many reasons! A few of those are touring the exhibit at the Nelson and connecting to the artist and my sisters in circle. The next was being able to process and create and trust! It revealed several layers that existed inside me that I hadn’t yet seen, and worked with that with art! I loved being able to use so many different mediums. The art process came easily and I found myself challenged at times, with the support to work through it. The music allowed me to be in narration of those new story that unfolded for me in a beautiful way! I’d love to do this again and tell other women about it!

The art retreat was wonderful! It gave me the opportunity to experience being in a container of creativity with other women. In this container, I discovered the endless possibilities of creative expression. After the retreat, I now find myself to be more present and open to the process of creating something new in each day. Thank you for offering this Sisterhood Art Circle.

I had a transformative experience at the workshop. Through artistic expression, I delved deep into my psyche in a safe, nurturing environment crafted by Barbara and Rima.Connecting with other women in the class, sharing stories and knowledge, supporting each other's journeys, and witnessing each other's artistic interpretations added a rich community dimension, enhancing our collective journey. This holistic experience of art, introspection, and community has deeply impacted me, leaving me grateful for the growth and inspiration shared.
